The Tsunami Walk - Kolkata

The Tsunami Walk took place on Sunday the 6th February, 2005. The biggest contingent assembled at the St. Xavier’s College grounds. The walk started at 10 am and proceeded towards the Polo Grounds, walking through the main and important roads of the city. Eminent personalities from different walks of life had assembled to participate in the walk. Industrialists, businessmen, film artistes, personalities from the music world, students and their parents, teachers, alumni/ae with their family and friends came together as a show of solidarity for the cause.

The participants totaled to about 15,000 people altogether. About 55 educational institutions (along with their alumni/ae association) had participated in the walk. This project was organized under the banner of KUFTA (Kolkatans United For Tsunami Aid). The congregation was received at the convergence venue by the Chief Justice of Kolkata High Court, Hon’ble Justice Altamash Kabir and General Officer in Command of the Bengal Area (military head of this region) Lt. General Shah and Asst. GOC Major General Kajuria.

The students sang a song for peace and solace for the departed souls who have been victims of this catastrophe. Usha Uthup, a renowned singer alongwith Shayne Hyrapiet, a Xaverian, sang songs for peace and solidarity. Few organizations handed over sums of money that they had collected to Fr. P. C. Mathew, President of St. Xavier’s College (Calcutta) Alumni Association and a member of the organizing and co-ordinating committee of KUFTA.

The event has been well covered by the press both in the print and electronic media.
